$200 Million Ansel Adams Photographs Found At Yard Sale

People either love or hate yard sales. Rick Norsigian's yard sale find may just change how some folks feel about yard sales. Ten years ago Norsigian bought 2 boxes of glass plate negatives at a yard sale for $45. Those two boxes contained 65 glass plate negatives that included images known to have been taken by Ansel Adams but believed lost in a darkroom fire. It has taken 10 years to prove that the photographs were taken by Ansel Adams but now an art appraiser says that the collection, which includes some images never before printed, may be worth $200 million. Yard sale this weekend anyone?

Avoiding Bad Foregrounds

Most of us have learned to pay attention to what is behind our subjects to avoid bad backgrounds but have we started ignoring foregrounds in the process? Foregrounds can ruin an image just as much as a bad background, as happened in the image on the right. Take some time to learn quick tricks to avoiding bad foregrounds.

Fun Photography - Light Drawing
First I showed you how to have some fun photographing fruit falling through water. Then we got a bit more "out there" and managed to set ice on fire. After that we captured water balloon explosions. Then we moved back to fire with spooky green flaming pumpkins for Halloween. Finally we froze time by capturing water splashes.
Now I've added a new fun photography tutorial. This time I'm teaching you how to photograph light drawings. I can't honestly say I'm teaching you to draw (just look at the example photo as proof I can't draw) but I can teach you how to capture your light drawings. From simple smiley faces to complex portraits or flying dragons, what you draw is up to you but this tutorial will make sure you capture the light.

Winner and Finalists of Assignment #69 - Flower Photography

For our flower photography assignment we focused our lenses on blooms of all sorts. There were an amazing 98 entries for this assignment!
We had some great lessons to help everyone capture better flower photographs and overall the entries were really well done.

Preventing Blurry Photographs
Color Temperature
There was a tendency among several entries to shoot in a less optimal orientation and exposures were off a bit. To help with these issues please review:

If you would like a critique of your non-winning entry, please let me know and I will be glad to provide one.

Photography Assignment #70 - Bird Photography

Our second July assignment is bird photography. Bird photography is a favorite subject of many photographers but sometimes a very frustrating one as well. In this photography lesson we'll learn how to get back to making it simple to great bird photographs. No super long lenses required. Just follow a few basic ideas and you can get great bird photos without a lot of expensive equipment.

Lens Mounts
Probably one of the most confusing things about DSLRs for new users is figuring out what lens to buy. Each camera works with a specific "lens mount". Lens mount refers to the end of the lens that fits into the camera and describes the size/shape/electronic components/compatibility of the lens to the camera. Much like the old saying "you can't fit a square peg into a round hole," lenses will not fit or work with your camera if they do not have a compatible lens mount.

Photo Myth #1 - Subject Must Look at Camera
Its something I hear far too often when I see people taking pictures of their children or friends..."look at the camera," "smile," "oh don't squint," and "smile for real." Forcing a subject to look at the camera ruins more good photographs than you would think possible. Parents spend so much time trying to coax a "real" smile out of their children that the end result is often tears from the children and yelling from the adults. Photographs are meant to be records of life. Do you want your photographs to record anger and sorrow? Stop believing there is one "right" way to take photographs of your children, family, and friends. Make photography a happy (or at least relaxed) event instead of a traumatic confrontation that might require years of therapy to recover from.
Make sure you plan for plenty of time when taking family portraits so that no one feels rushed. Make sure there are toys to keep children entertained. Light snacks and water are also a good idea if you will be outside for a fairly long time. And above all else, remember that it is Photo Myth #1 that a subject must look at the camera. Winner and Finalists of Assignment #68 - Slow Shutter Speeds

For our slow shutter speed assignment I asked everyone to use a shutter speed below 1/20 of a second. However, there was so much confusion with folks believing they had to use 1/20 of a second I allowed images taken at that speed as well. Slow shutter speeds allow us to capture low light subjects, express motion, capture rich colors, and record subjects otherwise impossible to predict. As always, we had a great selection of entries and some very good entries. Even though trying to judge these assignments is often so very difficult, it is a wonderful thing to see everyone learning photography so well.
There was a good variety of ideas for this assignment and judging was difficult as always. Great job everyone!

Avoiding Cluttered Backgrounds
Love taking photos of your family but hate the often cluttered background? Most of us have captured a "perfect moment," only to discover later that there is a child's toy or a forgotten sock hidden in the background. Professional backgrounds can make your images much "cleaner" but they are often very pricey. There is an alternative to spending a fortune if you are willing to spend a little time. With a few simple items available at your local hobby or fabric store, you can make your own professional-style background. Happy 4th of July
Happy 4th of July everyone! Have a great day and stay safe. Don't forget to pack your camera when you go to celebrations today.
We also have a fireworks thread in the forum where you can share you images with other forum readers. As I did last year, I will be selecting several images from that thread for inclusion in an image gallery on About Photography. The images selected for the image gallery last year were fabulous and I look forward to seeing this year's images! #1 Secret of Fireworks Photography

While most people are busy eating lots of BBQ ribs or trying to set up the biggest fireworks display on the block, photographers are busy preparing to take lots of fireworks photographs. Fireworks require a slightly different process than standard daylight subjects to capture but since I'm sure you've already read my "Basic Fireworks Photography" lesson and my "Advanced Fireworks Photography" lesson you are ready to get some nice shots.
But if you want to get truly amazing fireworks photographs you need to read my newest fireworks photography tip. I'm sharing with you the #1 secret of fireworks photography.

Photography Assignment #69 - Flowers
For our first July assignment our theme is "flowers." Wildflowers, purchased flowers, or even artificial flowers are all acceptable. Just remember that the flower(s) should be the main focus of the image.

Bend Light With FlashBenders
Its not often that I get excited about a new photography product. FlashBenders are an exception. When the company contacted me to ask if I would review them they actually looked like a great idea. Still, there are a lot of products out there that look like great ideas but do not function properly. FlashBenders only took about 5 minutes to change my mind when the product arrived. Compact, lightweight, versatile, and works as promised.
So what do they do? They attach to your add-on flash (with Velcro) and work as bendable reflectors. Because of the variety of sizes available this means that you get an amazing amount of control from your flash that just wasn't there before. Except for the very smallest size, they even bend into snoots. For creative lighting (and even just trying to diffuse flash to avoid shadows) the FlashBenders are truly a product that you are not going to want to go without.
